Impact of Intra-Faith Confict on Contemporary Indonesian Organizations (A Case Study of Majlis ul Uluma Al Indonesia and Ahl al-Bayt )

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of intra-faith theological disagreements within Islamic schools of thought on the official narratives of contemporary religious organizations. It provides a comparative analysis of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (Majelis Ulama Indonesia - MUI) and the Indonesian Ahl al-Bayt Association (Asosiasi Ahlul Bait Indonesia - ABI) regarding their positioning toward Twelver Shia Islam. The research posits that the radical divergence between these organizations is directly shaped by competing historical currents within the Shia intellectual tradition itself. Utilizing a descriptive-analytical and comparative methodology, the paper demonstrates that MUI constructs its critical discourse by relying on texts from classical, non-compromising schools, whereas ABI aligns with contemporary, reformist Shia advancements geared toward intra-faith harmony. The findings reveal that internal textual diversity leads to profound polarization within a nation's religious governance. The study concludes that the fact group criticized by MUI is fundamentally distinct from the contemporary reality represented by ABI. Ultimately, the paper recommends that religious institutions adopt a nuanced, deconstructive approach to global madhabs, prioritizing contemporary realities over historical anomalies to ensure communal stability.
