One of the distinctive features that Allah has granted this nation, setting it apart from others, is the concept of Isnād, which is a key determinant of the authenticity of the (matn). Scholars have devoted significant attention to it, conducting thorough studies and investigations. They developed specific terminologies to classify the types of omissions in the chain. For example, an omission at the beginning of the chain is termed muʿallaq; in the middle without continuity, it is called munqaṭi; with continuity, it is referred to as muʿḍal; and at the end, it is classified as Mursal. All these forms are generally deemed unreliable due to the unknown condition of the omitted narrator, except for the case of Mursal, which scholars have further analyzed and categorized.
A Mursal report from a Companion—such as when Ibn ʿAbbās narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) without having directly heard it from him—is accepted by the majority of the Muslim community, with some even reporting consensus on this matter. However, there has been significant disagreement regarding other types of mursal reports. Some scholars accepted them unconditionally, citing the virtue of the generation of that era as testified by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Others rejected them outright due to the uncertainty caused by the omission of the narrator. A third group established specific conditions for their acceptance.
This study arises from the researcher's interest in examining scholars' views on various aspects of mursal ḥadīth, selecting specific examples for detailed ḥadīth analysis. It also investigates the influence of these reports on differences among jurists regarding legal rulings. After evaluating the evidence presented by both sides, the researcher adopts the stronger opinion over the weaker one. A descriptive and analytical methodology has been employed to achieve the research objectives.
